This year, the Regional History Museum in Razgrad joined the celebration of Razgrad Day and the 148th anniversary of the city’s Liberation from Ottoman rule. On January 28, 1878, Razgrad was liberated by the troops of the XIII Army Corps under the command of Prince Alexander Dondukov-Korsakov.

During the solemn celebration with a torchlight procession and a dawn inspection, the director of RHM Tanya Todorova laid a wreath in front of the Mausoleum-Ossuary on Vazrazhdane Square as a sign of respect and veneration for the memory of those who died for freedom.

Especially for the holiday, the museum provided valuable relics from its collection for display in the cultural monument. Among them are a large portrait of the city’s liberator, Prince Dondukov-Korsakov, a work by the Razgrad artist Vasil Karadimov, and a portrait of the Russian Emperor Alexander II. All three military icons were brought to the Mausoleum-ossuary for worship. Visitors also had the opportunity to view authentic weapons exhibits from the Liberation period, arranged in the shape of a pyramid, as well as ancient candlesticks.

The mausoleum-ossuary is a shrine for the city and is among the first monuments in Bulgaria erected in honor of the Russian liberators and the Bulgarian volunteers who participated in the Russo-Turkish War (1877 – 1878).
