Children from Razgrad, Gabrovo and the village near Dobrich called Smolnitsa had the unique chance to find out in practice what museum specialists do.

The “journey” back in time at the Open Day was part of the two-day program of the Regional History Museum in Razgrad on the occasion of the International Day of Museums and the 40th anniversary of the Abritus Archaeological Reserve. The museum specialists involved in the initiative talked about the role of the museum in the search, study, preservation and presentation of the cultural and historical heritage of the Razgrad region. The director Tanya Todorova joined the walk in the past as a guide.

In the Interactive Museum, the main tour guide Viktoria Valcheva presented to her “colleagues” how to prepare and deliver an interesting and attractive talk and what is the most interesting thing about the profession of a tour guide, and during this time the children had already learned interesting things about the life and people in ancient Abritus.

Then, guided by archaeologists Dilen Dilov and Silvia Anastasova, the children became treasure hunters: they discovered, date labeled and described the finds in detail, just as archaeologists and fund keepers do. They had the opportunity to get to know and try the various tools and equipment used by archaeologists in their work in the field.

In another room, the museum educator Hristo Hristov and the designer Mihail Marinov turned the children into restorers of the objects from the lives of the centuries before us discovered during the archaeological excavations.

On the Open Day, children from various schools in Razgrad took on the role of curator-historian in the house museum “Stanka and Nikola Ikonomovi”. In the form of an interactive game, the museum pedagogue in RHM – Razgrad and Neno Yakimov from the “Latest History” department presented Dr. Petar Beron’s Fish Primer. The open lesson was dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the printing of “БȢква̀рь съ разлѝчны поȢчѐніѧ” – the most famous printed book of the Revival.

In the Ethnographic Museum, tour guide Polina Nedelcheva welcomed children from the first, second and third grades of the “N. Y. Vaptsarov”. She introduced them to the profession of ethnographer, and then everyone together recreated two customs from the traditional holiday calendar of the Bulgarians: “Little Christmas” and “Enyova Bullya”.

In front of children from the Center for Scientific, Technical and Scientific Creativity, the curator of the “Ananie Yavashov” house museum, Viktor Kostadinov, told about the scientist, translator, teacher, public and cultural activist, representative and secretary of the Third Grand National Assembly, a true post-liberation educator, chronicler of the history of Razgrad and himself a bright page of it – academician Ananie Yavashov. And he emphasizes one of his encyclopedic interests – his work on writing a Bulgarian-Latin botanical dictionary.

For the fourth year in a row, RHM – Razgrad celebrates International Museum Day in a different and attractive way for children. The idea is that the special program for them will show them the cultural heritage and historical past of the native region, to learn more about the main activities and functions of the museum, and the professions of museum specialists.

On leaving this year’s Open Day, everyone thanked them for the unforgettable history lesson in the ancient Abritus and the house museums in Razgrad.
