A two-day practical colloquium “Military Affairs and Weapons in Antiquity and the Middle Ages” is organized by the Regional History Museum in Razgrad on June 10 and 11. The forum is in cooperation with the Institute of Balkan Studies with the Center for Thracology and is part of the project “LABedia: Encyclopedia of Late Antiquity in the Balkans”, funded by the Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science.

The opening is at 10.00 in the conference hall of the Interactive Museum in ancient Abritus.

From 11.00 to 13.00 in the area of the lapidarium will be arranged weapons and armaments from Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

There, representatives of the “Antibiotic” Sports Shooting Club will tell about the 40-year history of the club, the successes in national and international tournaments, will show their equipment and will demonstrate precision shooting with the latest generation.

The theoretical part of the colloquium starts at 13.00 in the conference hall of the Interactive Museum.

Lecturers are:

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalin Stoev: “The Roman Navy in Moesia and Thrace: the genesis of military-administrative development”;
  • Eli Filipova, PhD student: “The contribution of interdisciplinary research from the Balkans to the study of military diets in antiquity”;
  • ch. Assistant Professor Dr. Samuil Kamburov: “Early medieval battle knives from today’s Bulgarian lands”;
  • ch. Assistant Professor Mario Filipov: “The Sword in the European Fencing Tradition in the XII-XV century”;
  • Milen Petrov, PhD student: “The Nikopol Crusade / 1396 / and the Holy Roman Empire”;
  • Todor Todorov, PhD student: “The Knight’s Field in the Late Middle Ages”.

On Saturday / June 11 / is the working meeting between the participants in the colloquium with representatives of the regional historical museums in Razgrad, Silistra and Dobrich and the museum in Preslav.

The participants in the forum will also visit the mainly renovated Sveshtari tomb in the “Sboryanovo” Historical and Archaeological Reserve.
