Prof. Rositsa Angelova PhD, Head of the Department of “New and Recent History” at the Regional History Museum Razgrad, participated on August 7 in a discussion dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the birth of Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian modernism.
The event was organized by BTA, and the discussion was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Yordan Eftimov, a literary critic and scholar. Other participants included experts, local historians, educators, and students.
In her presentation on the topic, Prof. Angelova emphasized that Pencho Slaveykov had the ambition to lay the foundations of a new national culture. He drew on European experience during his studies in Leipzig. Prof. Angelova also focused on the connection, in terms of aura, between Pencho Slaveykov and the artist Iliya Petrov, born in Razgrad, who also specialized in Europe – in Munich. Between the two artists, who, although they lived in different historical periods, there is continuity in the creation of timeless cultural values, one of which is modernism, to which the discussion was dedicated.
Those present also learned little-known facts about Pencho Slaveykov, about the personalities from his creative circle, and about his aspiration for Bulgarian literature to take a worthy place in Europe.
