A total of 90 children from first to fifth grade participated in the four weeks of the fourth summer educational program “Adventures in Abritus”, organized by the Regional History Museum. This time, there were girls and boys not only from Razgrad, the country, but also from Europe – in the last five days, two children from Norway and two from Liverpool in the United Kingdom, who are visiting their grandparents this summer, also got to know the lifestyle, customs and entertainment of the ancient Romans.
Something new and different happened on the last day of the program – two eras met in Abritus: after the children shot arrows at targets like in the old days, they had the unique opportunity to get acquainted with some of the equipment and armament of the Bulgarian Army: what the binoculars and the soldier’s helmet are for and how to disassemble and shoot a real “Kalashnikov” assault rifle were shown to them by Lieutenant Colonel Ventsislav Bonev and Major Plamena Nikolova from the Razgrad Military District. The children learned what it is to be a soldier, they also learned curious facts from the history of our army, as well as the opportunities to join it when they grow up.
The program was hosted by museum educator Hristo Hristov, who, together with his colleagues: designer Mihail Marinov, numismatist Vladimir Bekov PhD, archaeologist Silvia Anastasova, and tour guide Galin Donchev, transported the children back to the time of the Roman Empire, told them about it with talks, showed it to them with short films, and helped them feel exactly like those who once lived in Abritus with creative workshops and games.

For their diligence, at the end of each of the weeks in Abritus, the sunny girls and boys received certificates for their participation in the program and a gift: a magical tea cup, backpack, or hat – all with the “Abritus” logo.

We remind you that the program is unique in the country in its content. Within at least a week, children from first to fifth grade from morning to noon have the opportunity to get acquainted with the ancient past of Razgrad, with the way of life and culture of the people in ancient Abritus, and in the halls of the Interactive Museum to learn interesting facts about the people who inhabited the city at that time. In parallel, they also get acquainted with the artifacts from our material cultural and historical heritage stored in the museum in the archaeological expositions.

The ultimate goal – after a few days in Abritus, the children will leave with knowledge that will be useful to them not only in history classes.

And one more thing: during the program in Abritus, the children are without their mobile phones and their capabilities. They run and play together, learn and have fun with the games of their peers from ancient times. They leave with many new friends. And a wish that next year they will meet and have adventures in Abritus again.
