The visiting exhibition “Batak 1876 – Chronicle of an Immortal Spring” was officially opened at the Ethnographic Museum in Razgrad. The exhibition was prepared by the Historical Museum in Batak, and the Regional Historical Museum (RHM) – Razgrad is the first institution in the country to present it in the anniversary year marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.
The exhibition features 10 informational panels presenting the chronology of events surrounding the Batak Uprising, as well as 17 movable cultural artifacts. Among the exhibits are the 19th-century icon of “St. Modest”—the only surviving item from the burned-down Church of “St. Nedelya”—the prayer book of Priest Neycho Paunov, as well as personal belongings and weapons of the uprising’s participants.
At the opening, the director of RHM – Razgrad Tanya Todorova emphasized the importance of the exhibition as a form of preserving historical memory and recalling the high price of national freedom. She also drew attention to the contribution of the local region to the liberation struggles, recalling the establishment of a revolutionary committee by Angel Kanchev in Poroishte in 1872, the participation of a resident of the village of Blagoevo in the Botev detachment and the passage of Tanyo Voivoda’s detachment through Ludogorie.
The Head of the Department of “New and Recent History”, Prof. Rositsa Angelova PhD, emphasized the moral role of Batak as a symbol of self-sacrifice and spiritual resilience. She emphasized that history is a responsibility to future generations and it is important for young people to be exposed to authentic testimonies of the past.
The official opening was accompanied by an artistic recital of the poem “Memories of Batak” by Ivan Vazov, presented by students from “Nikola Ikonomov” Primary School, led by Daniel Peev. Among the guests were the Deputy Mayor of Razgrad Municipality Zornitsa Evgenieva and the Head of the Regional Department of Education Angel Petkov.
The exhibition can be visited at the Ethnographic Museum until January 23, 2026, after which it will continue its presentation in other cities in the country.
